Nigeria's most daunting challenge since flag independence in 1960 has been that of leadership malaise which is responsible for Nigeria's unmitigated socioeconomic backwardness among the comity of nations. The country has been consistently misgoverned and looted by successive military and civilian regimes that hold Nigerians hostage without let. Incompetent leaders have held the country back, corrupt leaders have injured its potential to become an emerging global economic hub with competitive advantage considering its humongous human and natural resources. Nigeria's Corrupt Electoral System: Incompetent and corrupt rulers have continued to emerge as the country's leaders through a heavily prebendalized and compromised electoral processes that marginalize patriotic and competent Nigerians who have refused to pay their ways into political offices by insisting that they be elected on merit rather than buy citizens' votes. The voters who wish to vote their conscience are overwhelmed by citizens compelled by the atrocious economic policies of government to sell their votes to the highest bidders which allows the cycle of bad, corrupt leadership to persist.
